PNG Biomass will construct a central nursery with the capacity to produce over 10 million seedlings per annum. The nursery will be located adjacent to the power plant site. The nursery will consist of three different microenvironments that the plants will progress through during their development:

  • Germination / Rooting Houses – environment controlled greenhouses for the germination of seed or the rooting of cuttings.
  • Growing Area – an environment where the seedlings are provided with sufficient water and nutrition to encourage rapid healthy plant development.
  • Hardening Area – the plants are exposed to full sun and watering is reduced to harden plants ready for the planting in the field.

In addition, PNG Biomass will source between 10 and 20% of their seedling requirements from community owned and managed nurseries. PNG Biomass will assist the communities with the construction of the nurseries as well as providing technical and managerial training and mentoring to community members working in the nurseries. PNG Biomass has already established three community nurseries in the Markham Valley.

Extensive field trials have been conducted to develop an extensive plan for silviculture. In addition, a program of productivity improvement continues with a comprehensive series of trials and the selection of candidate clones for trialling and eventual commercial deployment. It is the projects plan to be establishing 100% clonal plantations of Eucalyptus pellita hybrids within 5 years, significantly improving the productivity of the plantation.
